Role Purpose

 To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience. To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English. To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission

Role Context

 

As a Teacher of English, you will support British Council’s global English strategy by

•           delivering teaching to the highest standards of ELT

•           enhancing British Council’s reputation as a world authority in ELT

•           continuing professional development and sharing of best practices

Main accountabilities

 

Teaching

  • Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning needs and modes of learning
  • Ensure teaching meets British Council Global Teaching Standards, as well as organisational and learner expectations.   
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout their learning, and actively promote learner autonomy and progress
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices.

 

Teaching Centre Activities

  • Support teaching centre’s activities and British Council plans
  • Attend staff meetings and otherwise contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Support local marketing and promotional strategy, and assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service through dissemination of information and communications with students
  • Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards and uphold professional responsibilities and values.  Ensure British Council’s values and behaviours are reflected in their work

 

Customers & Stakeholders

  • Maintain good relationships with customers and colleagues
  • Ensure customers are aware of British Council’s cultural relations role and help develop opportunity for students to gain some understanding of the UK and its values and to participate in inter-cultural interactions either in class or as out of class activity

  • Ensure guidelines and policies are applied and upheld in relation to Safeguarding, Data Protection, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Special Educational Needs and Diversity, Health and Safety

Additional job requirements

The teaching centre operation runs from 8 am till 9 pm  Monday to Saturday, so it is expected that you will work either early or late shifts as required

Amost all teaching takes place inside the centre, but teachers can be required to travel to alternative locations.

Teachers will be expected to teach face to face and online

Experience

 

Post CELTA experience in teaching adults and young learners, and willingness to acquire experience of all ages and course types, under supervision

Qualifications

  • Cambridge CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL  or equivalent
  • High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent  

 

Recognised diploma in EFL i.e. Cambridge DELTA

 

Additional specialist qualifications such as YL Extension to CELTA, or IELTS examiner status
