Role Purpose
- To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English
- To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience
- To support the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission
Accountabilities
- Plan and deliver high-quality English language lessons which meet the needs of different customer groups, taking into account individual learning styles – up to the number of contracted teaching hours
- Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy and a sense of progress
- Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials, and related services, to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
- Complete teaching-related administrative tasks to specified standards
- Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain the British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
- Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students’ understanding of contemporary UK
- Assist the teaching center team in delivering excellent customer service and upholding British Council Values and Behaviours
- Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
- Child protection
- Equal Opportunity and Diversity
- Health and safety
Qualifications
Essentials
- Cambridge CELTA/ Trinity Cert TESOL
- Undergraduate/University degree in any discipline
Desirables
- Cambridge DELTA/Trinity Diploma or equivalent
- Relevant master's degree

Work Experience
- 2 years post-certificate (i.e., CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL) experience.
Salary & Benefits
- Salary: You will be paid at an hourly rate that corresponds to your teaching qualification and experience post qualification as stated below; In addition, you will receive a project-completion bonus equivalent to JPY 700 per actual hour taught, provided all outlined standards are met
- 4,400 yen/hour for teachers with a CELTA or equivalent
- 4,900 yen/hour for teachers with a DELTA or equivalent
- Commuting allowance: Commuting allowance based on actual commuting cost up to a max of ¥30,000 per month
- Start date: 1st September 2023
- Duration: 12 months contract
- Contract type: Fixed-term (Renewable)
- Work Schedule: The British Council Tokyo Teaching Centre is looking for qualified and experienced teachers to join our offsite team, teaching at Japanese universities and / or junior high schools.
Additional information
- Local restriction on employment: These roles are only open to applicants who currently have permission to live and work in Japan.
- Income tax and national insurance: Your salary is gross and is subject to local taxes and statutory deductions for mandatory contribution to the Japanese Welfare Pension Insurance (Kosei Nenkin hoken), Health Insurance (Kenko hoken) and Unemployment Insurance (Koyo hoken) schemes under the laws and regulations of Japan from time to time in force. The British Council will make deductions from your salary at source in respect of tax and other sums due where appropriate.
