Job Overview

 

British Council Japan is recruiting experienced, enthusiastic, dedicated Adult teachers to join our teaching team. We are keen to appoint staff who can demonstrate good professional skills, are willing and able to learn and develop, and are good members of a team. Please note that teachers may also be assigned some Young Learner classes based on operational needs.

Qualifications

 

Essentials

 

  • 3 year University degree
  • Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL

 
Desirable

 

  • Recognised diploma in EFL i.e. DELTA or Trinity Diploma TESOL

 

Language Requirements

 

High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module

 

Work Experience

 

Essential

 

  • 2 years full-time post certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL – with experience gained from teaching a variety of levels.

         Note a minimum of 1200+ hours of experience should have been gained from teaching adults.

 

Desirables

 

  • Experience teaching IELTS preparation classes 
  • Experience teaching Japanese learners

 
Salary & Benefits

 

  • Salary
    • JPY 267,488 per month for teachers with CELTA or equivalent
    • JPY 282,773 per month for teachers with DELTA or equivalent
  • Commuting allowance: Commuting allowance based on actual commuting cost up to a max of ¥30,000 per month
  • Start date: September 2024
  • Duration: 1 year (Renewable)
  • Contract type: Fixed-term
  • Right to work in country: Pre-existing right to work in Japan. These roles are only open to applicants who currently have permission to live and work in Japan. Please note that if your current working visa is under the ‘Other’ category (e.g. Professor, Instructor, Artist) you will need to apply for permission to work under the category (Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services).

 
Additional information

 

  • Work Schedule: The contract is for 30 hours of work a week, with up to 18 hours per week of teaching. Teachers appointed to this position may be required to work on both Saturdays and Sundays. They may be primarily based in one Teaching Centre but may be required to work at other locations based on operational needs.It is essential that all teachers must also be capable and willing to teach on all types of courses and projects based on operational needs.
  • Local restriction on employment: These roles are only open to applicants who currently have permission to live and work in Japan. 
  • Income tax and national insurance: Your salary is a gross salary and is subject to local taxes and statutory deductions. The British Council will make deductions from your salary at source in respect of tax and other sums due where appropriate. If the laws and regulations of Japan require you to account directly for any tax or other sums that are due in respect of your salary, it is your responsibility to properly account for such tax and other sums to the appropriate authorities.  The British Council will make no additional payments to you in respect of any liability for tax or other sums that you may have. Any liability you may have for tax or other sums due in other jurisdictions will be your responsibility, save as set out in this contract.  No additional payment will be made to you by the British Council in respect of such liabilities.
