Role Purpose

 

  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English  
  • To support the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission 

 
Accountabilities

 

  • Plan and deliver high quality English language lessons which meets the needs of different customer groups, taking into account individual learning styles – up to the number of contracted teaching hours
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy and sense of progress
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
  • Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students’ understanding of contemporary UK
  • Assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service and upholding British Council Values and Behaviours
  • Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
    • Child protection and safeguarding
    • Equal Opportunity and Diversity
    • Health and safety 
       

Qualifications
 

Essentials

  • Cambridge CELTA OR Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent 
  • University degree (necessary for expatriates to gain a work visa)

 
Desirables

  • Relevant Master’s Degree
  • Recognised diploma in EFL i.e. DELTA/ Trinity Diploma
  • PGCE/B.Ed in Primary or relevant subject
  • TYLEC or YL extension to CELTA
     

Work Experience

 

  • Proficiency in English i.e., FULL mastery of English across all 4 skills - equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module, with certification
  • Relevant experience of teaching English  to young learners 
  • Demonstratable knowledge of safeguarding and SEN or commitment to develop in this area 
  • Experience in teaching relevant age groups: 
    • Primary aged 6 to 10 
    • Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 

 
Salary & Benefits

 

  • Salary: You will be paid at an hourly rate that corresponds to your teaching qualification and experience post qualification as stated below;
    • CELTA : MYR92 per teaching hours
    • DELTA : MYR108 per teaching hours
    • For non-teaching tasks, you will be paid at an administrative rate of MYR 72 per hour.
  • Location: Kuala Lumpur centre
  • Working Hours: There are no normal working hours. Times of work will vary from term to term according to the teaching centre business needs of British Council Malaysia and will normally be notified to you in advance by your line manager. Your exact working times will be determined, and communicated to you, by TC Operations Manager.
  • Work schedule: The Malaysia Teaching Centre is looking to recruit an Hourly Paid teacher to join the team from September 2024. Teachers in Malaysia are expected to work both weekend days, although some Hourly Paid teachers will work either Saturday or Sunday. While there is some limited adult teaching the bulk of the teaching is with Young Learners.
